Tutorial Six: The internet and online communities

Hello fellow bloggers!! Today we will be discussing the online communities, one in particular that we will be looking at today is a very popluar website that has majority or our youth conforming to the one and only social networking site: www.facebook.com

Facebook is a community that focuses on enabling people with the ability to participate in social networking. Facebook enables individuals to keep in touch with friends and family from afar and provides them with the option to upload photos and videos, join groups, meet new people and share experiences with others.

This site is extremely interactive, people are able to chat to their friends online, and keep in touch from far distances - other countries such as America, France, England and many more use facebook as a social networking site and people can post photos and videos on the site allowing their friends and family to keep up to date with their whereabouts and what they are up to. Facebook has many games and applications available that also provides its users with fun and entertaining activities online.

People in the Facebook community are seeking a sense of belonging, within Facebook there are many small communities, people are friends of friends and they then can connect with long lost friends. By contributing to this online community people are fulfilled with a sense of belonging and everything is much easier in terms of keeping in touch

Below is a clear example of someone sending a Facebook wall post to a friend wishing them happy birthday:

The ethical issues that arise in this community are mainly based around privacy issues - you never know who is looking at your profile picture, looking up your information (stalking)

This community enables successful relationships and friendships from afar. there is no tradition in this community because it is a relatively new community that has been introduced therefore there is little tradition in place. this community allows friendships and keeping in touch to be much more accessible and easier to maintain.

This community lacks the physical contact of keeping in touch. people find it easier, quicker and more accessible to catch up with friends and families online. So this is a huge issue that is developing because the less that we see people face to face, the more isolated our world is becoming.
