Tutorial Seven: Assistive Technology

Hi there everybody!
I hope that so far you have enjoyed the blog posts previously added! This blog will discuss a piece of assistive technology that i learnt about in our assistive technology tutorial and thought would be very useful to some people.
Assistive technology refers to a wide range of devices, services, strategies, and practices that are used to decrease the problems people with a disability have with doing daily tasks and leisure activities" (Cook & Hussey, 2000).
One piece of assistive technology I found extremely useful is the 'talking photo album'. This photo album enables its users to record a message for each photo slot and can be very effective for many people and people who have degenerative conditions for example - MND (motor neuron disease). the album is also very useful to those who experience cognitive and memory impairments. This album enables people with the ability to share the memories and past experiences. The talking photo album allows the user to record for 10 seconds per photo. The album costs around $15 so it is not too expensive. To keep the album running, batteries are necessary. The messages can be recorded over so they can be changed and altered as many times as you like!

A final note to you bloggers out there - as part of the participation in occupation class, we have to submit a report letter proposing a new piece of technology that OT's or clients would benefit from in a specific setting. I am proposing for the community OT's to receive funding for a 'Navman MY50' car GPS. Check out www.navmanwireless.co.nz for more details about this product! I think that with Community occupational therapists each having a GPS mapping system in their cars they will be more productive with their time when at work and they will be more comfortable with out the stress of having to read a paper map, instead they can be directed by the voice of the GPS system and be able to get from location A to B easier.
