Tutorial 2: Digital Camera use and applications

“A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature”.
This statement in terms of digital camera technology relates to the fact that the camera is the same in terms of the purpose that it serves, it has merely been developed on to improve its quality of pictures, reliability of producing images and improving its appearance to be more compact and sturdy. Some pluses to digital camera technology are that you can delete the images before you print out the images and you are able to see what the photos look like before you have them printed, the images are more sharp and clearer to the viewers eye and the colors are much more vivid than they used to be. Minuses to the digital camera technology that you are less likely to have the film printed out - instead you just upload them onto a computer and images are easily deleted or forgotten about.

Digital images can be stored on the camera itself, transferred onto other devices such as a USB, computer, hard drive, DVD, website such as flickr or photobucket, facebook, bebo, emails. computer programs such as photoshop and iphoto can edit and manipulate the images to ensure that the photo is ideal and meets the users wants and needs.

The public websites of transferring and sharing files produce ethical issues because anyone is able to see the images, copy them from the websites and use them for their own purposes. This is an issue in terms of privacy and confidentiality because it is open for public use so anyone can look at them or take the images.

Digital images can be used to take photos of the clients living environment for application support, images of available equipment for clients to view. Also equipment websites such as www.cubrorehab.co.nz, www.invacare.co.nz ...

Flickr.com is a website that allows family, friends and people in general to keep in touch with each other and current adventures through the effective use of photo sharing. It offers a place to upload, organize and share photos with others. Flickr is an ideal community to keep in touch with your friends, families and others around common interests. It is an amazing place to share your photographic works and your thoughts.

www.photobucket.com is another website that offers similar services to flickr.com - offering a image sharing website, where friends and family can keep up to date with your latest photo uploads.

The difference between a Digital and Optical zoom: A zoom is a feature on many cameras enabling the subject appear "closer", filling more of the image area. Digital zoom is a software feature that has trade-offs in image size or quality. Many cameras and some camera phones offer both optical and digital zoom, for increased total zoom. Optical zoom uses moving lenses to make the subject appear closer whereas digital zoom, additional detail is visible when optical zoom is used. Optical Zoom definition (Phone Scoop). (n.d.). A megapixel can be defined as "One million pixels. Refers to the resolution of a digital imaging device (monitor, scanner, video camera, still camera, etc.). For example, a five-megapixel still camera captures a picture composed of 5,038,848 pixels, each pixel containing a red, green and blue color dot. Such an image would have a 2592x1944 resolution: 2,592 pixels across, 1,944 pixels down". Megapixel Definition from PC Magazine Encyclopedia. IT in today's society has become extremely common place. In todays society technology is forever changing and society is forced to adapt to the changes on a constant basis. Society needs to keep up with the changes and further develop on their IT skills because using this technology is unavoidable. Devices that I feel comfortable and competent using are: Ipod, Computer, Television, cellphones, dvd player, camera, wikipedia, facebook, twitter, bluetooth, google, mp3 players, all online websites, itunes.

From previous fieldwork experiences, IT is used for documentary purposes - medical notes and client information is documented under the clients NHI # and put onto computer systems and programs that allow health practitioners to look up previous medical notes and clients history. IT is also used for emails, research and other purposes.

This is a huge ethical issue developing, because the more technology further develops and the more that programs such as websites that provide the sharing and transferring of information and files, the more that privacy and rights have been invaded. this new way of technology is very invasive and public and unfortunately this new way of life if unavoidable.
